Building 2
Stone repair work is underway for the exterior entrance steps to Building 2 in Lowell Court. Anticipated work hours are weekdays from 7AM-5PM. Some intermittent noise is expected. This project is scheduled through mid-November.
The central entrance to Building 2 in Lowell Court will be inaccessible during this operation, except as emergency egress. Occupants will be directed to alternate doors in Buildings 2 & 4 to access Killian Court. Signage will be posted. View the attached maps for the work location and alternate exits.

Building 6
Beginning Wednesday, August 28, a lab space is scheduled to be renovated in the basement of Building 6, Room 6-017. Anticipated work hours are 6AM-3PM from Monday through Friday. Heavy noise is planned to conclude by 9AM daily, with some occasional light noise for the duration of the workday. These activities will be contained within the rooms. Signage will be posted. This project is scheduled through mid-October.

Building 6C
In order to accommodate the installation of new air handling equipment for Building 6C, a crane will be stationed in Eastman Court this fall. Beginning Monday, September 30, crews are scheduled to install fencing and mobilize the staging area. Anticipated work hours are 7AM – 3PM. Noise from site assembly and the crane is anticipated. This work is scheduled through the end of November.
Please note that during construction, materials for the project will be transported via Eastman Court to the roof of Building 6C. The crane and loading site will be enclosed. Construction vehicles will be entering and exiting the loading area through the courtyard via Ames Street. A police detail will be onsite to direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Access to Buildings 6 and 8 from Eastman Court may be restricted during crane operations; signage will be posted directing occupants around the area.

Building 32
As part of the Institute’s investment in infrastructure renewal, crews are scheduled to renovate the façade of Building 32. This work includes masonry and metal panel renewal, and cleaning and restoring the surfaces of the façade and some roof sections. Construction hours are 7AM – 3PM. During construction, some local noise and vibration are expected. This project is scheduled to continue through January 2026.
Construction is planned to be completed in phases, beginning at the Compton Court Stairs, the Elevator Tower, and the Peter Tower. The project team is working closely with the occupants impacted by this work and has been meeting with key contacts in each area to review the proposed schedule and share the scope of work associated with the project.
Phase 2a: July 2024 through February 2025
Construction activities are underway with the installation of scaffolding and swing staging for Phase 2a at the Compton Court Stairs, the Elevator Tower, and the Peter Tower. The Compton Court Stairs will be inaccessible during this phase. The scope of work includes masonry repairs, stair tread repointing, selective metal façade and roof panel replacement and installation, sealant replacement, and the cleaning of the façade and panels.
Phase 2b: February 2025 through January 2026
Beginning in February of 2025, the areas of work will switch for Phase 2b, which will include the Dreyfoos South Tower, Gates South Tower, Lower Gates East, East Entry, Collier Entry, Lecture Hall 123, and the Amphitheater. During this time, access to the Collier Entry and Amphitheater will be restricted and occupants will be redirected to alternate points of entry throughout the Stata Center.
For this phase, the scope of work will include scaffolding and swing staging installation, masonry repairs, roof installation, roof coping, removal and replacement of deteriorated brick, sealant replacement, and the cleaning of the façade and panels.

Building 56
On Monday, November 18, crews are scheduled to begin construction in the IS&T computer repair room, 56-129, located on the first floor of building of Building 56. This project is scheduled through the end of January. Anticipated work hours are weekdays from 6AM-3PM. Heavy noise is planned to conclude by 9AM daily, with some occasional light noise for the duration of the workday. These activities will be contained within the room. Signage will be posted.

Buildings 62 & 64
Construction activities are underway as MIT proceeds with the renovation of East Campus, Buildings 62 & 64, with activities continuing through Summer 2025. Construction hours are 7 AM – 5 PM, Monday through Friday, with some weekend and evening work expected.
Project phases
- Project mobilization in June will include extending fencing along the site perimeter of McDermott Court.
- Beginning the week of July 5, the building site as well as the sidewalk and parking spaces along Ames Street next to Building 64 will be fenced off.
- Demolition activities are scheduled to begin during this time, and traffic will increase in the area.
- Pedestrians will be directed to bypass the construction area and use the eastern sidewalk of Ames Street.
- August 2023 – August 2025: The perimeter fence will extend north of the site near Building 66, where it will remain until the end of the project. Construction work will begin in full.
Ames Street closure – November 7
On Thursday, November 7, street paving operations are scheduled to occur on Ames Street, weather permitting. A portion of Ames Street and the cycletrack between Buildings 64, E14 & E15 is scheduled to close from 7AM-6PM. The northern portion of Ames Street near Buildings 66 & 68 will remain accessible to local traffic only during these hours, such as deliveries to Hockfield or Eastman Courts as needed. Gray Way will remain accessible from Ames Street south of the closure after noon time.
Vehicles and cyclists will be detoured around the area during work hours. The eastern sidewalk adjacent to Buildings E14 & E15 will remain open and accessible for pedestrians at all times. Cyclists will be asked to walk their bicycles along the sidewalk or to follow an alternative route around the area. Vehicles will be diverted to Wadsworth Street or Memorial Drive to access Amherst and Main Streets in east campus. Due to the complex pathways around Kendall Square, please review the map for details about alternate routes to east campus and MIT Medical from various points.
In the evening, traffic on Ames Street will return to two-way access. Signage will be posted to direct pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, and a police officer will be on location. Please be aware and use caution when traversing this area.

Building E15
On Tuesday, November 12, work is scheduled to begin on the renewal and modernization the passenger elevators in Building E15. The work will include installing new equipment and new cab finishes. Anticipated work hours are 7AM to 3PM, Monday-Friday, with some noisy work scheduled for earlier morning hours. Most of the work will take place in the elevator machine room and elevator shaft. Some minor noise is expected throughout the workday.
The elevators will be renewed one at a time, allowing one to remain operational while the other is out of service. Car #1 is scheduled to be out of service through mid-March. Once completed, Car #2 will be removed from service through the end of July 2025. Signage will be posted.
About this project
This renewal project is part of a broader effort to renew and modernize the elevators and lifts in several different buildings across campus. Modernizing the elevators will replace obsolete equipment, protecting the safety of the MIT community while improving the day-to-day experience of building occupants and visitors.

Building E19
As part of the Institute’s investment in infrastructure renewal, façade and window repair work is scheduled for Building E19. Weekday work hours are 7AM – 3:30PM, with some weekend work expected. Construction activities are targeted to begin in July and continue through January 2024.
Façade renewal and window replacement: January 2024 - June 2024
Crews are scheduled to mobilize onsite on the Ames Street side of Building E19 on Monday, April 1, to perform localized repairs of the façade and selected window replacement. The sidewalk and all entrances will be protected from the work above and will remain accessible throughout construction. Some noise and vibration from façade cutting, hammer drilling, and chipping work are anticipated.
Anticipated work hours are weekdays from 7AM-3PM. Signage will be posted. This project is scheduled through the end of June.
Main stairwell closure
Crews are scheduled to repair and replace the glass block windows of the stairwell adjacent to the Main Street entrance of Building E19. Beginning Monday, September 18, the stairwell will close to accommodate this work. This closure is scheduled through the end of October.
The stairwell will be inaccessible except as emergency egress. Signage will be posted directing occupants to alternative stairwells. The elevators at the Main Street entrance are scheduled to remain accessible and operational throughout this work. Access to the building will not be affected.

Buildings E23 & E25
Buildings E23 & E25 facade
As part of the Institute’s investment in infrastructure renewal, crews are scheduled to renew the façades of Buildings E23 & E25. This work includes repairing, replacing, restoring, and repointing the brick and surfaces of the façades. Anticipated construction hours are 7AM – 3PM. During this construction, noise and vibration are expected from façade cutting and chipping work.
Scaffolding has been erected along the work areas. This staging will serve as a platform for work crews during construction. The team will repair cracked and damaged brick, repoint mortar, and will repair window lintels as needed. This operation will incur noise.

East Campus: Kendall Square Initiative

- MIT Health will validate parking for patients. (Cars exiting the lot without validation will incur a non-refundable $60 fine.)
- Cars that are in the lot for more than two hours are subject to towing. If patients have appointments that exceed two hours, MIT Health will contact the Parking Office on their behalf.
General Construction Updates
- Police details will be utilized throughout the project area to assist with pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
- Large equipment will be removed and brought to site on and on-going basis. This activity may occur after hours but no disruptions are expected.
- General construction activities will continue on Saturdays. Work will occur within the City of Cambridge allowable work hours, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Building W18: Music Building
Construction activities are underway as MIT proceeds with a new Music Building behind Building W16. As part of MIT’s mission to enhance the student experience, the project will provide highly advanced performance, rehearsal, and music teaching spaces as well as music technology resources such as a makerspace, research lab, and production labs.
Construction hours are 7 AM – 6 PM, Monday through Friday, with some weekend and evening work expected. Please note that the schedule is subject to change.

Building W41
Construction activities are underway as MIT proceeds with the redevelopment of the Metropolitan (Met) Warehouse, Building W41. The adaptive reuse of the Met Warehouse will provide a new home for the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P), including classrooms, design studios, research spaces, faculty offices, and areas for meetings and collaborative activities. Additionally, the space will house the new MIT Morningside Academy for Design and create a location for the largest community-wide makerspace on campus managed by Project Manus. The anticipated target completion date for this project is summer 2025.
Below you’ll find an overview and high-level schedule for the major phases of construction. Standard hours are 7 AM – 6 PM, Monday-Friday, with some weekend and evening work expected. Please note that the schedule is subject to change.
Vassar Street sidewalk closure
For the duration of the project, the sidewalk and cycle track adjacent to the building along Vassar Street will close to pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of the project. The westbound cycle track will be detoured to create a shared lane on Vassar Street (the eastbound lane will be unaffected). Pedestrians will be directed to the south side of Vassar Street via existing crossings at the New Vassar Residence Hall and at Mass Ave.

Albany Street Garage
Beginning on Monday, July 29, the Albany Street Garage (N4) is scheduled to partially close, from levels 2 through the rooftop, in order for crews to implement renewal work including the repair and waterproofing of the structure. Construction hours are weekdays from 7AM-3PM. This renewal work is scheduled through January.
If parking is required during this time period, an N4 parking permit will allow access to the ground level of the garage, along with the N10 parking lot or the 139 Mass Ave Lot (rear). Signage will be posted.

Amherst Alley
Utilities work is underway begin in manholes in West Campus. The work sites include areas along Amherst Alley in front of Building W71, the pathway between Tang Hall and Westgate (Buildings W84 & W85), across Audrey Street, and in the Police Station parking lot. Work is scheduled from 7AM through 3PM each day, with noisy work beginning after 9AM near residences. This project is scheduled through mid-December.
A cable pulling truck will be onsite and some low noise from a small generator and pump are expected. The work areas will be cordoned off. Streets and pathways will be accessible throughout this work, though several parking spaces will be restricted in each work area. Signage will be posted.

Vassar Street
Beginning Tuesday, October 15, overnight utilities work is scheduled to commence along Vassar Street and the southern sidewalk adjacent to Building 35. During this work, the Vassar Street eastbound travel lane, between Massachusetts Avenue and Main Street, is scheduled to close nightly to accommodate the utilities crew; the sidewalk adjacent to Building 35 will be closed throughout the project. Anticipated hours are weeknights from 7PM-5AM. This steam line repair work will generate some noise from concrete cutting. This project is scheduled through January 2025, though it may extend as needed once conditions are identified.
Police will be present during these activities, and the Vassar Street closure area will be clearly marked. Signage will be placed to help direct vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. Access to all buildings will be maintained. Please use caution when traveling in the area.
Overnight eastbound lane closure on Vassar Street weeknights
Each weeknight through the subsequent morning, between 7PM and 5AM, crews will establish a protected work zone in the roadway and sidewalk of Vassar Street adjacent to Building 35 with temporary fencing. This work site will impede vehicular travel in the eastbound direction. During these times, Vassar Street from Main Street to Mass Ave will be one-way westbound for vehicles. A temporary cycle lane will be established with protective barriers in the eastbound direction around the site during work hours. For the duration of the project, pedestrians will be redirected to cross the street at Mass Ave and mid-block to the northern sidewalk to bypass the work area.
The travel lane and cycle lane will be plated and reopened each morning, and the temporary fencing moved into the sidewalk area. The cycle lane work area will be plated with recessed, anti-skid plates.
Vehicular detour - weeknights from 7PM-5AM
Eastbound vehicular traffic, including shuttles and buses, will be detoured around the area from Mass Ave to Albany Street onto Main Street each night after 7PM. Access for abutters in Stata Garage, the childcare lot, and the Buildings 37 and 39 underpasses will be maintained from Vassar Street via Main Street.
Shuttle and bus detour - weeknights after 7PM
Beginning at 7PM each weeknight, the Tech Shuttle will be detoured around the area to Albany Street. During these times, the Tech Shuttle stop located in front of Building 35 on Vassar Street (Vassar Street at Mass Ave) will be temporarily relocated to Albany Street in front of Building N10. The MBTA CT2 bus will also be affected; see the MBTA site for details. Please be prepared for potential delays.

DCR TRAFFIC ADVISORY:
Safety Improvements for the BU Bridge Corridor of Memorial Drive in Cambridge
Beginning on Monday, October 7, 2024, and continuing through Friday, October 11, 2024, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and from Tuesday, October 15, 2024, through Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (with potential night and weekend work) the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will intermittently close lanes and implement detours along Memorial Drive from Magazine Street to Audrey Street via the BU Bridge rotary in the City of Cambridge to accommodate more than $1.5 million in safety upgrades for pedestrians and cyclists. The safety improvement work includes widening the shared use path leading to the BU rotary; improving and reconfiguring wheelchair ramps and median islands at the intersection of Memorial Drive and the BU Bridge; replacing nearly 700 linear feet of existing Boston Pattern Fence; restriping the crosswalks; and implementing a speed limit reduction to 25 mph along the BU Bridge corridor. Drivers should expect traffic congestion during rush hours and seek alternate routes, if possible. Cyclists are advised to ride at slow speeds with increased caution, stay within marked bike lanes, follow detour signage and lane delineation and yield to pedestrians. Traffic patterns will be clearly marked, and a police detail will be on site.

Eversource
Eversource utilities investigation on Ames Street and Vassar Street through late October
On Monday, September 30, Eversource work is scheduled to begin on Ames Street to identify existing underground utilities. Once Ames Street investigation is completed, crews will commence work along Vassar Street. Anticipated construction hours are Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some work may be conducted outside of these hours based on approval from the City of Cambridge. This activity is expected to continue through the end of October.
During this activity, the Eversource contractor will mark out locations, and a drill truck and vacuum truck will dig small trenches and determine the location of existing underground utilities. When complete, crews will backfill and restore the excavated area.
Some lane restrictions may be necessary during work hours and ÒNo ParkingÓ signs will be clearly posted in advance. Traffic on Ames Street and Vassar Street may be reduced to a single lane or detoured around the work. The sidewalk and cycletrack may be impassable at the work location, and pedestrians and cyclists may be directed to use the opposite sidewalk or roadway. Police will be onsite to help direct pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic during this work. Access to the buildings in the area will be maintained.
