Alvar Aalto created one of the 20th century's great architectural masterworks with his landmark Baker House dormitory at MIT, built in 1947. The building is famous for an ingenious wave plan that maximizes the number of rooms with southern exposure, orienting them at oblique angles to soften the noise from busy Memorial Drive. It has always been one of the most popular dormitories at MIT.
Internationally recognized as a masterpiece of modernism, Baker House underwent a painstaking four-phase renovation marking its 50th anniversary on the MIT campus. The renovation project team, led by Perry Dean Rogers Architects, associate architects for the original construction, carefully balanced the integrity of Aalto's design with functional upgrades. All rooms and common areas, wiring and mechanical systems, floors and roofing have been renovated. Even Aalto's original birch furnishings have been restored or replaced with careful reproductions.
