Brain organoids, derived from human stem cells, exhibit a repertoire of features that may
serve as a heuristic tool for neurophysiologic insights. These tiny structures have a three dimensional
architecture and differentiate into a very broad variety neuronal and glial cell types. Remarkably, they also
display electrophysiological features with a temporal structure that bears some resemblance to encoding
patterns in the brain. Because organoid activity arises spontaneously the putative encoding patterns we observe
represent a pre-configured state achieved in the absence of any experience.
